About Us

Franklin Street Public School is a dual track school which provides us with the unique opportunity to work in a bilingual setting. We are committed to developing within each student the attitudes, knowledge and skills needed to be a contributing and responsible member of our changing society. We empower our students to strive to attain their potential and to value and celebrate the diversity of our cultures.

History

In 1846, the Village of Markham built a frame school house on or near the site of Franklin Street P.S.  The original frame building was severely damaged by a fire in 1886 and was replaced by a 4-room brick building in 1886, called Markham Village Public School.  In 1906, the school was once again damaged by a fire. In 1951, the building was enlarged and in the 1960's the name was changed to Franklin Street Public School.  Between 1949 and 1968, four renovations added nineteen classrooms, a resource centre and a general purpose room. French Immersion was introduced in 1985, forming a dual track school.  For more information please see The Official Site of the City of Markham.

Facilities

In 1992, Franklin's gym, stage, resource centre, staffroom and office were updated. There are now 34 classrooms, a gymnasium and a well furnished bilingual library. A child-care center, owned and operated by Rainbows is also located at Franklin Street P.S. They provide before and after school care.
