Opening: The first, full meeting of the 2024-2025 Franklin Street PS School Council was called to order at 6:31 pm on September 10, 2025 by 2024-25 chairperson Lisaan Mohammed in the FSPS library.
Agenda

Agenda Item: Land Acknowledgment Presenter: Samantha Smith
We affirm that we are all treaty people and acknowledge that the York Region District School Board is located on the lands of two treaties. These treaties have been signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the First Nations of the Williams Treaties who are: the Mississaugas of Alderville, Curve Lake, Hiawatha, Scugog Island; and the Chippewas of Beausoleil, Rama, and Georgina Island who is our closest neighbour and partner in education.
To honour this agreement we will take up our responsibility to be respectful of their traditions, knowledge and inherent rights as sovereign nations. We will respect their relationship with these lands and recognize that our connection to this land is through the continued relationship with these First Nations, and we acknowledge our shared responsibility to respect and care for the land and waters for future generations.

Agenda Item: Administrators’ Report Presenters: Carolyn Brndiar
Discussion:
● Busy start to the school year!
● Intermediate Volleyball – practise has started (boys and girls)
● Cross country – has started, grades 4 to 8, meetings have started. Grade 3s can participate if they choose, but they do need to run. ☺ Areas are on October 10th at Milliken Mills Park. Rain Date: October 14 Action: Carolyn to put the dates in News from the Nest. John H has volunteered to help co-ordinate and communicate training, etc.
● Screen in Front Foyer – has announcements of the day listed
● Meet the Teacher – October 8th
o Some teachers will do structured drop in
o Some will be drop in anytime
o BBQ dinner from 5 pm, tickets for food will be sold prior
▪ Tables, garbage cans, chairs, etc, to be organized
▪ ACTION: Lisaan to secure BBQ vendor (orders due by October 1st)
● News from the Nest – will have upcoming dates included
● First fire drill today – went well
● Safe and Caring Schools Presentations have started (G 4-6) – Carolyn talks to the students about what a safe and caring school looks like (covering bullying, discrimination, consent, conflict, and progressive discipline).
o Progressive discipline starts with kids being spoken with, then parents called, could build to suspension.
o Also introduced the Report It tool. It’s important to note that reporting through that mechanism doesn’t get to the Principal for 2 or 3 days, which is often too late. Advice from the school is to come right away (to a teacher, or the office) if there is an issue.
o Messages to the kiddos: Be kind, keep your hands and feet to yourself
o Other notes about Safe and Caring Schools:
▪ Anything that is considered racist or discrimination, then the school needs to get Safe and Inclusive Schools involved.
▪ When the lunches are switched (i.e., outdoor time first, lunch second), the school sees less conflict
▪ Teachers to be trained in community circles – every week the kids will do a community circle, and will get to the point that they can talk about issues they are having, and will also include restorative practices (seven teachers will be trained in this)
▪ Suggestions made from parents present in the meeting:
Agenda Item: School Lunches Presenter: Lisaan Mohammed
Discussion:
● Current lunch options for 2025/26 school year include Dominos Pizza (Mondays), Mr Sub Subs (Tuesdays), Lunch Lady (Wednesdays), Kids Kitchen (Thursdays)
● Note we are trying out a new pizza vendor (Dominos)
● Potential new option for Fridays: KOME School Lunch (Japanese)
o Traditional Japanese bento boxes
o 2 sizes to choose from: $6.30 for small, $8.70 for large (+HST)
o Nut, sesame free and not many eggs
o Prepared fresh daily
o Delivered in thermal boxes, still warm in winter
o Label each container with student name and class
o Rotating menu – each week, the vendor offers 2 boxes (one Japanese, one Japanese influenced)
o All in attendance agreed to an October/November trial and then revert to parents to see if they’d like to continue or go back to pasta day for Fridays… This would be a fundraiser – suggestion was to charge $8 for small, $10.50 for large (to be confirmed)
● Another option being considered is Chat Time bubble tea – Council is considering offering it on the last week of every month next school year. Still checking price point. Would be offered at lunchtime (plan is to choose sub, Kids Kitchen or Lunch Lady day for bubble tea day)
